Introduction to Mind/Body Healing

NH 321

Texts:

The Healing Mind, by Dr. Paul Martin
Deep Healing, by Emmett E. Miller, M.D.

The texts chosen for Introduction to Mind/Body Healing examine the intricate relationships between the mind and the body. Dr. Martin discusses some of the specific connections between the immune system and the mind by providing examples of recent research efforts in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, including how stress impacts the healing process. Dr. Miller also discusses some of the same connections, along with examples of mental healing techniques, but focuses primarily on relaxation techniques (particularly guided imagery) designed to alter and/or manipulate the status of an individual's present mind-body relationship. Both texts use case histories to demonstrate concepts that are often quite complex.

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how stress, as well as environmental and social factors, influences the mind and health of the body. Additionally, the course explores the reactions between the psyche and soma and how they impact homeostasis. Stress is the major factor in the development of illness; therefore specific forms of stress are also examined.
