Balancing Life, Work, Family

Denise will explore ways to nurture and empower ourselves through difficulties that inevitably arise as we strive to fill the demands of professional and personal roles. Ways to manage stressors creatively in holistic ways will be outlined and participants can rediscover the joy that lies at the core of their beings. Join Denise as she demonstrates how to construct a holistic action plan to manage stressors creatively and to rediscover the joy in life.

Basic Iridology

This class will cover the basics of iridology theory and how to use the iris as a map of the body. The class includes instruction on the iris signs, iris structure, and iris color as a means of assessing physical strengths and deficiencies.

Chasing the Blues Away

This has become a hot topic in our frantic world as more and more people fall under the gray spell of depression, anxiety, and stress. Thankfully, herbs and an “herbal way of life” offer an effective solution to the stresses of everyday living. In return, they provide our bodies with essential nutrients that are necessary for the health of the nervous system, calming and grounding us. This will be a discussion of favorite nervine herbs and specific therapies that are deeply calming and relaxing.

Classification of Chinese Herbs

Many of the herbs used in Chinese herbal medicine are found growing in various parts of the world, including North America. Their classifications have counterparts in other systems of herbal medicine, including Western herbalism. Michael will cover the basic categories of Chinese herbal classifications, exploring in depth the use of a few important herbs in each category.

Connecting Physical/Emotional/Spiritual Health Through Iridology

The iris is truly a “window to the body and soul.” This class will teach students how to recognize signs in the iris that signify physical, emotional, and spiritual patterns. How to see right-brain creative tendencies and left-brain analytical tendencies through the iris will be illustrated. Learning to interpret these diverse iris signs will give the student insights into how to improve physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Creating Your Own Nutritional Plan

Eating the right foods and getting the right nutritional mix can help reduce cravings, mood swings, and energy fluctuations as well as promote weight loss. By listening to our own internal wisdom and understanding basic nutrition, we can create our own nutritional plans for vibrant health.

Endocrine Body Typing

It’s possible to tell a great deal about a person’s general health tendencies just by looking at their body shape. Originating with Dr. Henry Bieler, glandular body typing is a way of determining glandular dominance and weakness, as well as general health and personality tendencies, from a person’s physical shape. This class will feature an expanded system of seven glandular body types and includes suggested remedies and health practices for each.

The Energetics of Homeopathy

This class is based on the Natural Reader Press publication “The Clayton College Model of Empowerment for Natural Health Practice.” Conducting an assessment, providing education for the client, and offering recommendations within the context of the empowerment model will be explored. Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate these skills in an interactive class that will focus on learning the language required to practice without engaging in diagnostic or prescriptive discussions with the client.

Conventional wisdom would have us believe that it is what we lack that undermines our health. Naturopathy is distinguished by a conviction that health is already within us. In the true spirit of education (“drawing out”), the traditional naturopath uses the time-tried methods of fasting, water stimulation, and gently challenging exercise to stimulate the system into a healthy response. In this class, Matthew offers an in-depth study of seven plants, explaining when and how to use them. The class also covers the personalities of these herbs and the corresponding human personalities they might benefit. He shows how nature can inform, teach, and heal us. The session also includes case studies.

Survival 101

Blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes, and the threat of terrorism have made us all aware of just how easily we can find ourselves at the mercy of the elements. This lively, interactive class will give you the opportunity to learn many of the skills of our self sufficient ancestors. Watch a demonstration of primitive fire making and then give it a try yourself! Learn how to gather, prepare, and cook wild foods and even make your own bark basket. This is going to be a fun, hands on class, so be prepared to be entertained while you learn some skills that may one day save your life.

Taming Your Chew

In this workshop, Denise explores causes of food control issues holistically, from the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental perspectives. Strategies for overcoming overeating will be outlined and participants will be given specific, effective tools for personal use as well as for helping others struggling with various eating issues. Denise will also demonstrate how to construct an individualized, holistic action plan for changing self-destructive thoughts and behaviors into positive, productive ones.

TCM–Understanding the Precious Influences of the Body

The precious influences of the body include yin, yang, qi, blood, fluids, essence, shen, and the organs. Understanding their qualities and characteristics helps us more accurately assess a potential herbal application and provides guidelines for maintaining health and promoting longevity.

Understanding Chinese Herbs and Formulas

Chinese herbal medicine is recognized as the oldest and most evolved system of herbal medicine worldwide. This course will present an overview of the practice of Chinese herbal medicine, including its underlying philosophy, individual assessment methods, classification, processing, and methods of use.

Urinary Tract Remedies

David Winston, AHG

These remedies are based on the specific medication system of the Eclectics. David will discuss the history of the Eclectic movement and its influence on herbal therapies today. Specific remedies for the urinary tract will be discussed and then the class will focus on “black letter symptoms” which allow us to easily differentiate the appropriate herb, not based on a disease model, but rather specific patterns of dysfunction that can be easily recognized. This allows the practitioner a more precise method of recommending herbs for the person, not the disease.

Vitalistic Principle in Herbalism, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy

The vitalistic principle, a foundation of many natural healing therapies, recognizes that the physical body is animated by a vital life force. Stimulating this life force supports the body and aids the healing process. Matthew explores the important healing doctrines from the 16th to the early 20th century from a vitalistic and holistic view. This session reviews the law of similars, doctrine of signatures, foundations of homeopathy, and the rise and fall of Eclecticism.

Join this delightful yoga of embodiment class that focuses on listening to the body and learning its language. The class will include both lecture and movement.
