The Empowerment Model: Description, Demonstration, Discussion
with Susie Hale

The Clayton College model of empowerment for the natural health practitioner focuses on using educational language while refraining from any diagnostic or prescriptive sounding communication with the client. To understand the function of the empowerment model, the practitioner must first grasp the philosophy of always coming from the perspective of client education.

From the first encounter with the client, the practitioner sets the stage for implementing the empowerment model. During each session, and throughout all other interactions with the client, the practitioner must remain focused on the concept that the outcome is always to empower the client to take greater personal responsibility for his or her health. Therefore, every encounter must build upon and support the goals of the empowerment model: educate and empower the client.
