On the Road: 2001

For our third annual trip to the Nature's Sunshine Products convention in Minneapolis, MN, admissions advisor Lucie Nicholson and admissions coordinator Lisa Blackmon joined marketing director Judy Williams and Mary Grace McCord, communications director, for educational sessions, networking with product reps, enrolling new students and visiting with current students and graduates. The NSP conference also marked the public premiere of CCNH's recent 21st anniversary video, Learning Made Natural.

Flexibility in Changing Times

In mid-September, at the end of the week that changed all our lives, the CCNH travel team had been scheduled to split off for two different trips: to the annual American Naturopathic Medical Association (ANMA) conference in Las Vegas, NV, and to a first-ever Body Mind Spirit Expo in Atlanta, GA. It was determined that the ANMA national conference would be rescheduled for mid-November, and that the new regional expo would go on as planned.

Attending the Atlanta event on behalf of CCNH were Laura Perry, M.S. in Natural Health graduate and N.D. candidate, and Mary Grace McCord, communications director. Other exhibitors ranged from flaxseed and wheat germ growers to Feng Shui experts, massage therapists, natural health reporters, mercury-free dentists, organic whole foods distributors, chiropractors, Reiki practitioners and authors, among others.

Laura Perry described her own distance learning experience as being so rewarding at the masters level that we inspired her to continue at the doctoral level. "With a traditional bachelors degree from Emory University and extensive continuing education, I felt I had a great basis for comparison," she told prospective students visiting our booth.

She sheepishly admitted to being skeptical at first about distance learning. "I looked at Clayton College for three years before I enrolled," she said. What helped her decide to enroll was having her young daughter's chronic health problems successfully, and creatively, addressed by a local naturopath who graduated from CCNH.

"Distance learning was the only way for me, as a working mother with a handicapped child," said Perry, recalling how many times she studied online while cradling her daughter on her lap.

Heartwarming stories like Laura Perry's, along with the many successes of her natural products company (www.au-naturel.com), make the lives of working travelers a bit more rewarding.

But Wait, There's More

October conferences for CCNH included a new date with Bioneers in San Rafael, CA, and our second annual attendance at the Mind Body Spirit Expo in Philadelphia, PA. Conference headliners include Andrew Weil, M.D., in California, and metaphysical leader Marianne Williamson in Pennsylvania.

In Philadelphia, CCNH faculty member Deb Kern presented "Brave Grace" and performed a Freedom Dance. (Kern made a similar presentation recently at the 2001 Wellness Odyssey in Stephens Point, Wisconsin; attending the conference with her was CCNH academics director Linda Powell, R.N.)

Our last autumn gathering was the rescheduled ANMA conference in Las Vegas, NV, as the mid-September terrorist events have led to two conference changes here at CCNH: one that we attended and one that we had planned to host in October!

CCNH concluded its 2001 tradeshow touring schedule with a trip to Las Vegas, NV for the rescheduled American Naturopathic Medical Association (ANMA) annual three-day convention in November.

Clayton College marketing director Judy Williams, faculty coordinator Anita Barnett, N.D., communications director Mary Grace McCord, and admissions coordinator Lisa Blackmon staffed the CCNH booth and attended meetings with ANMA executive director Don Hayhurst, N.D., and nutritional consultant Raj Pal, N.D., current president of California Naturopathic Medical Association (CNMA).

We were proud to attend seminars led by CCNH alumni Richard Drucker, N.D., of Texas, who spoke on nutraceuticals; Cory D. Carter, N.D., of South Dakota, whose topic was the lymphatic system's care and treatment; and Sallie Lau, Ph.D., of Florida, a minister who addressed the homeostatic balance of mind/body/spirit health.

Our staff also enjoyed networking with CCNH alumni Neville Cramer, M.D., H.H.D., of Bio-Tracker Technologies in Arizona, author Sally Byrd, N.D. of Florida, naturopathic consultants Howard Giskin, N.D., of New York and Bill Betzner, Ph.D., N.M.D. of Colorado, and Texas alumni Lois Weeks, a naturopathic consultant, Lorelei Buckley, a lymphatic specialist, and naturopath and herbal specialist Eliezer Ben-Joseph, N.D., among others.

Congratulations to Juice Plus representative Maryam Lotfizadeh, who won a free CCNH study program of her choice during the ANMA conference.
