Water — It’s Time to Conserve

Here are some tips that will help conserve water and you cultivate good water habits, which can not only be used during the summer — but year round.

Money Down the Bathroom Drain

  • Turn the water off the water while brushing your teeth. Leaving water on while brushing your teeth can waste a gallon of water per minute.
  • Fix those leaky faucets and toilets. A dripping faucet can waste 20 gallons of water a day. While a leaking toilet can waste tens of thousands of gallons a day.

  • Switch from a bath to a shower. You can also take it another step by taking  shorter showers.
  • Replace old fixtures and appliances with water-efficient ones. A low-flow showerhead can save around 45 gallons of water a day and a low-flow toilet can save up to another 80 gallons of water a day.

Fun Experiment:

Place a large container in your sink under the faucet. Turn on the faucet while you brush your teeth and keep in running until you are finished. Measure the amount of water in the container.

How many cups of water can be saved every time you brush your teeth?

Multiply that number by two since you brush your teeth twice a day. How many gallons is that? With 52 weeks in a year, you could save how many gallons of water a year?

Other Water Conservation Ideas

  • Wash laundry and dishes with full loads.
  • Choose native plants for your garden as they will be better suited to your climate and require less water to maintain.
  • When watering plants, do so in the evening or early morning.
  • Harvest your rainwater. By using a rain barrel on your downspouts, you can collect water that can be used for watering plants.
