The Kitchen Sink
This month we are starting with helpful cleaning hints. All of these recipes have been contributed by staff, and are the result of personal experience. Please share any ideas you have with us—maybe we'll use it in the Kitchen Sink!
Baking soda is great for getting black scuff marks off linoleum - just dampen a cloth a bit and put a dab of soda on it, and it works wonderfully!
Cleaners with orange or lemon oil cut grease and dirt quickly, making cleaning time a snap. They also keep wood moisturized and glowing.
To clean your microwave and remove the lingering food smells, just boil lemons! Cut two lemons into quarters and place in a shallow, microwave friendly dish. Cover the lemons with water. Place dish in the microwave and cook on high for two to three minutes or until boiling. Carefully remove the dish from the microwave. Food spills will easily wipe up and your microwave will smell lemony fresh.
Kills all types of mold and mildew, also helpful with bad odors, especially those caused by dampness. (Does not remove stains.)
You'll need:
small spray bottle
approximately 6-8 oz. of rubbing alcohol (higher the percentage the better)
30 drops Cinnamon essential oil
15 drops Lavender essential oil
Pour alcohol into spray bottle (leave a little room at the top of the bottle), add essential oils, shake well. If possible allow spray to sit for at least 24 hours before using.
Notes: You need real aromatherapy grade essential oils for this recipe, fragrance oils are useless. DO NOT get this in your eyes, if you do go straight to the emergency room (do not pass go, etc.), and take the spray with you. I've never had a problem using the spray on upholstery or other fabrics, but if you're worried about staining, test a small spot or the underside first.
