Teas for Transitioning to Vegetarianism

Parsley Tea

As meat begins to be cut out of the meal plan it is important to ensure that vegetarian sources of vitamin B12 are included in the diet. Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin B12 and it can easily be added to vegetarian dishes as well as herbal teas. Red clover is a good source of minerals such as iron and calcium. It is also works to detoxify the body and purify the blood, two important actions during the transition period of becoming a vegetarian.

1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried red clover
1 cup boiling water

Combine herbs and cover with boiling water. Steep for 10 to 20 minutes and strain.

Liver Detox Tea Formula

When transitioning to vegetarianism it is beneficial to detoxify the liver from built up chemicals and toxins that may have accumulated throughout the years of eating meat. Dandelion stimulates the liver and encourages the flow of bile, promoting cleansing. It is also a diuretic, which tones the kidneys and promotes elimination. Dandelion is also a good source of minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium.

2 parts dandelion root
2 parts burdock root
1 part fennel
1 part ginger
1 part milk thistle
1/2 part mugwort

Combine herbs and cover with 1 1/3 quarts of water and bring to a boil. Simmer for about 20 minutes, remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.

Anti-Flatulence Tea

Any time the diet undergoes a significant change the embarrassing issue of excess flatulence can present a problem. The following blend can calm the digestive system and promote relief. Peppermint is a common digestive aid, which helps with nausea, cramps, and stomach upset. Cinnamon bark and ginger are often combined for help with digestive issues and both also enhance the flavor of this blend. Fennel acts as an antacid and neutralizes excess acids in the stomach. It helps aid digestion and helps to relieve flatulence.

2 parts peppermint
1 part cinnamon bark
1 part fennel seed
1 part ginger root

Combine above herbs and add one heaping teaspoon of the blend to one cup of boiling water. Steep for 10-20 minutes.

Digestive Aid Tea

The following blend may be beneficial for the general digestive complaints that may accompany changing to a new diet of high fiber, vegetarian foods. Peppermint helps with nausea, stomach cramps, and general stomach upset. Anise is a traditional remedy for colic and digestive issues. Angelica is also helpful for stomach upset as well as gastric ulcers.

Oriental teapot

2 parts anise seed
2 parts peppermint
1 part angelica root
1/2 part orange peel

Combine above herbs and add one heaping teaspoon of the blend to one cup of boiling water. Steep for 10-20 minutes.

Acne Herbal Steam

When transitioning to vegetarianism or making any other significant change in the diet, the detoxification that accompanies these changes may trigger acne, as the skin is the largest eliminatory organ of the body. The following herbal facial steam is beneficial for ridding the skin of toxins.

Licorice root
Violet Leaves
Comfrey root
Dandelion
Dock
White Willow Bark

Combine equal parts of above herbs. 2 to 4 tablespoons of the herbs can added to 1 quart of water. Cover the pot and bring to a boil, then lower the temperature and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. A towel tent may be used for 10 minutes over the head and pot to create a facial steam.
