Tummy Teas

We are about to enter the season of over-indulgence of one variety or another. Halloween is coming and that could mean a tummy ache or two for children and adults alike (it's hard to keep out of the candy dish sometimes)! Here is a collection of teas to soothe and strengthen the digestive system.

I Believe I'll Have Another Cookie Tea
Brigette Mars, Tea Formulator

"Everyone has to believe in something..." begins the saying that inspires this tea. Its warm and spicy herbs enhance digestion, and the fennel is naturally sweet and tasty.

To Blend 54 Servings

1/4 cup crushed cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup chopped, dried ginger root
1/4 cup fennel seed
1/4 cup cardamon seed
1/8 cup peppermint leaves

Mix ingredients in a glass container. Store away from light for up to a year.

To Brew One Cup

1 1/2 teaspoons blend
1 1/2 cup water

Add blend and just boiled water a French coffee press or warmed teapot for 15 minutes. Strain if needed; add milk if desired. Dunk cookies and drink warm!

Overindulger's Tea
Maggie Oster, Tea Formulator

This tea was designed to be drunk both before and after big celebrations, or by people who can't seem to avoid hangovers no matter how prudently they imbibe. Dandelion root is a gently cleansing tonic for the liver. Ginger may help to ease the nausea of a morning after. Hibiscus adds color, flavor and Vitamin C.

To Blend 54 Servings

1 cup hibiscus flowers
1/2 cup dandelion root
1/4 cup finely chopped crystallized ginger

Combine ingredients in a glass container. Store away from light for up to a year.

To Brew One Cup

2 tablespoons blend
1 cup water

1 teaspoon honey

Add blend and just boiled water to a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and serve.

Upset Tummy Tea
Sheron Buchele, Tea Formulator

Both herbs in this simple, delicious tea are easy to grow, and both help soothe an upset stomach. Peppermint stimulates the digestive system; some herbalists consider it a balancing herb -- one that fosters relaxation when you are tense, but boosts energy if you are tired.

To Blend 40 Servings

3/4 cup dried peppermint leaves
1/2 cup dried chamomile flowers

Mix thoroughly. Store away from light for up to a year.

To Brew One Cup

1 heaping teaspoon blend
1 1/2 cup water

Steep blend in just-boiled water for about 5 minutes. Serve hot or cold with honey to taste. It also makes a wonderful sun tea.

Double Green Digestive

This is an excellent blend to aid digestion

1 teaspoon dried catnip leaves
1 teaspoon dried mint leaves

Mix leaves. Infuse 1 teaspoon mixture in 1 cup boiling water. Steep 5 to 8 minutes.
