Graduate Spotlight

Tom Ciraulo, M.S. graduate and Ph.D. candidate

This New York accountant first turned to natural health alternatives when his wife injured her back at work and faced a lifetime of disabling pain. An elderly mentor encouraged him to learn lymphology, and Tom was soon delighted to see that with his own two hands he was helping to soothe MaryAnn’s body aches with lymphatic stroking exercises rather than strong medication.

He enrolled with Clayton College of Natural Health, and earned his master's degree while working full-time and helping to raise two daughters. When his mother was later diagnosed with breast cancer, Tom marshaled all his training into what has since become a humorous and comprehensive guidebook, Learn the Simple Truth to Achieving Optimum Health. Presenting his mother with facts and a well-researched alternative approach to chemotherapy and radiation, Tom again turned his healing energies to help a loved one. Jackie is now a cancer survivor of 2.5 years, and her oncologist wrote a glowing testimonial for the book jacket.

Part of his naturopathic plan is to help his mother rebuild her alkaline reserves, using green leafy vegetables and green supplements such as spiralina, barley grass and chlorella. Eating too much meat, he adds, creates an acidic environment in the bloodstream. Tom’s book emphasizes raw foods, since heat destroys a fruit or vegetable’s nutrients. His diet recommendations include a ratio of 50-80 percent raw plant foods, and 20-50 percent cooked foods (preferably living foods rather than meat). As Jackie became stronger, Tom introduced her to the most powerful lymphatic exercise of all: jumping on a mini-trampoline or rebounder.

Tom Ciraulo is a frequent guest on radio and TV talk shows, bringing humor to health subjects in order to make his points more memorable. “Recently I told a radio audience to just stop eating dairy products, period. One caller said, ‘But I only drink a little bit of milk here and there, that’s all.’ So I said ‘Fine. Your house in on fire and you’re only pouring just a little bit of gasoline on the flames. Is that what you want?’”

You have to admit, he has a point.

Along with his Clayton College doctoral studies, Tom sells a line of nutritional supplements for immunity-building, detoxification and acid/alkaline rebalancing. He is also working on a corporate wellness program and fine-tuning the formula for a meal replacement drink. “Liquids in suspension are much more bioavailable than capsules,” he explains. “We seem to have little time for meal preparation – not cooking, mind you, simply taking time to choose the right foods. I want to help people to take responsibility for improving their health. The answer is not processed, prepackaged, fast foods.”

What is the answer? Tom Ciraulo says to simplify, simplify. He is a big advocate of deep-breathing, and sending out positive energy by laughing and being optimistic. “We are all beings of charged particles, and like attracts like. You get back from the universe what you send out into the universe.”

Tom is eagerly studying to become a naturopath because “I just love to help people,” he says. “It’s great to help someone handle their finances better, but it’s really exciting to help them live a healthier life.”
