Graduate Spotlight

Surina Jordan, M.S. in Holistic Nutrition
“Love is what we feed people.”

As a journalist, Surina Ann knows the power of words. As a former bank executive, she knows that flow comes from balancing one’s income and out-go. When she chose to leave Corporate America, her motivation was to help people to make lifestyle transitions.

Surina Ann’s parents grew a vegetable garden, providing their eight children with natural health role models – from nutritious meals to soul-nurturing, worshipful daily gatherings at the kitchen table.

She learned, early on, that a little bit of gratitude goes a very long way.

In raising her own family, Surina Ann knows “It’s not what we say, it’s what they see.” She is referring to a bright teenage daughter who has seen both her parents grapple with serious illness and come out on the other side – well again, and grateful for life.

While working for a Fortune 500 company, Surina developed a thyroid imbalance that created hormonal discomfort. When conventional medical treatments made her condition much worse, she turned to nutrition, herbs and other supplements and turned her life around.

She decided to study holistic nutrition, remembering that both her naturopath and her nutritionist “just couldn’t say enough about Clayton College. So I did my own research and was delighted to find such a comprehensive, flexible and affordable way to study at my own pace while continuing to work full-time.”

Her interest was so great, in fact, that she joined the board of a natural food co-op and eventually became president. She started an online newsletter, Body Temple News, and formed an “Eat to Live” support group. “Our study group had weekly taste tests, acquainting people with simpler, unprocessed foods, new tastes and textures, creating new recipes by choosing organic plant-based proteins, adding new ingredients to find zestier, more satisfying and healthier alternatives to animal-based proteins.”

Nutritional stewardship is what she calls it.

This educational outreach, borne of Surina Ann’s conscious decision to learn and to serve, sprouted into a natural Godsend for her husband, as well. “When Herb was diagnosed with a rare presentation of cancer, we knew that nutrition could help save his life. We explored the various conventional cancer treatments, and chose the ones that made the most sense. We put our faith in knowing that the human temple is created pure, and we ourselves can re-create orderly balance, strength in the midst of havoc.”

Their daughter couldn’t help but notice.

“Roxane has a solid foundation in the whys and wherefores of healthy eating. As a teenager, she lives with peer pressure. The deal we have is that our family gathers for two healthy meals each day, breakfast and dinner. At lunchtime, at school, I know she’s mindful of the power of choice.”

Surina Ann earned her second CCNH degree, an M.S. in Holistic Nutrition, and has written two books: Start Living Recipes and Got Cancer? Congratulations! Now You Can Start Living.

She is helping healthcare providers put in place prevention and outreach programs and she is helping businesses put in place lifestyle management programs that reduces healthcare cost.

She is teaching people how to create a healthy home pantry, how to become fully aware that cooking is an act of love. She teaches individuals how to pause and be grateful for the ability to choose healthy foods to bring into our homes. She wants everyone’s kitchen to be soothing, magnetic, and, of course, nurturing.
