Graduate Spotlight
Becky Rupert, N.D.
Growing up near her grandparents’ organic farm, Becky says she has always been a student of natural health. One of her favorite neighbors was a chiropractor and a naturopath. Even as a child she was intrigued by his intuitive power of muscle testing – which became her first realization that each person, no matter how young, has the power of choice.
“Doc Bauer took a rainbow assortment of vitamins; his wife would prepare little cup-fulls with different combinations, but he took supplements and she didn’t. Over many years we saw drastic differences in the way she kept aging, while he always looked the same.”
On the other hand, her dad worked long hours and his diet-of-choice was red meat and potatoes. When he died of a heart attack at the young age of 53, Becky the teenager could see for herself that nutrition plays a central role in optimal health. Looking no further than the family garden for fruit and vegetables, she learned to supplement a healthy diet with herbs, vitamins and minerals.
Her first job was stressful and chaotic. Working as a photographer involved long hours, difficult clients, and up-close exposure to film processing chemicals. Over a few years her intuitive voice began as a whisper but finally yelled at her to run, not walk, and find another profession.
Managing a health food store was a soothing transition, and her boss was a big believer in employee education. A homeopathy conference was Becky’s epiphany – planting the seeds of her interest in studying naturopathy with CCNH, and seeking advanced homeopathy certification from other programs.
“Homeopathy has such incredible healing potential and is so transformative because it can help heal the whole person. From a holistic point-of-view, 10 people with asthma may get 10 different remedies because each individual’s ‘exciting cause’ or ‘exciting factor’ may have a totally different trigger: different causes from different elements – cold air, humidity – or maybe it’s emotional, such as suppressed anger.
“Anger is a great impetus for change, but suppressing it can lead to BIG illness,” she adds. “So the homeopath is like a detective. Sometimes the most important obstacle to healing is the exact same thing that a client doesn’t want to disclose. And part of homeopathy is mystery – working at the energetic level.”
Becky’s favorite part of this work is being able to see people transform, visit by visit, in body language, outlook and demeanor as well as improving physical conditions. “Once a client sees their own ability to address chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, ADHD, allergies and addictions, the sense of empowerment is life-changing.”
Asserting that even frequent travelers can take greater control of their diet, her husband is a prime example: “Pete is a truck-driver who takes his own food on the road. When he stops for groceries, he goes straight to the organic aisle.”
With an enthusiastic 12-year-old daughter who studies food labels and enjoys converting unhealthy recipes, the family is now exploring a raw food diet. Becky recently overheard her five-year-old son tell another child to avoid cookies with sprinkles because of the artificial color.
“One way our family shows love for each other is by growing organic food and making food choices that support health, not compromise health. We do taste tests at home with organic food components versus processed non-foods and the results always speak for themselves.”
At home and in the community, Becky loves to teach. She leads two homeopathic study groups, one for the general community and another for practitioners.
