Graduate Spotlight
Jonny Bowden, Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition
“Get healthy; achieve more”
Jonny Bowden (pronounced Bo’ den) is a nationally renowned weight loss coach whose newest book, The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, was released in Jan. 2007 to rave reviews. Of those who most admire Jonny’s lively, articulate writing style — alongside his ability to engage huge audiences by touching the hearts of individuals of all ages — many of his fans describe themselves as serious losers.
And that’s precisely what Jonny Bowden is after.
“The serious losers are able to lose emotional baggage that is far heavier than excess pounds,” he says. “Those who can change their thinking can also, more easily, change their habits and achieve more success in all areas of life; all because they learned to think differently about food.
“In other words, what we decide to eat is just as important as how much we eat.”
Spoken like a true psychologist, Jonny was drawn to doctoral studies with Clayton College after earning his masters degree in psychology and counseling while living in Manhattan. The former NY radio talk show host now lives in Los Angeles and hosts “The New You,” a Dallas–based weekly radio call–in show on KLLI — FM.
Wherever he goes, Jonny Bowden’s inquisitive spirit loves to study and enjoys translating research into lifestyle news that people can use. And it seems, for this adventurous soul, that his witty gift of gab comes naturally.
His father was a Harvard–trained lawyer and judge who, at age 70 still drove a motorcycle to work! His mother, with a “glamorous ‘Auntie Mame’ type of personality” sang on Broadway and became a sculptor. With such a confident upbringing, teenage Jonny learned story–telling skills from Harlem evangelists such as Rev. C.L. Franklin, the father of Aretha.
Weight gain is a visible problem that grows bigger every year, Jonny says with full seriousness.
After completing his Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition while writing books and teaching at holistic health expos and conventions, Jonny was one of two–dozen speakers at his alma mater’s annual natural health conference in 2006. Leading a three–hour intensive on how to create one’s own nutritional plan, Jonny previewed a few of the forthcoming lessons in The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, alongside the vast kitchen table wisdom from earlier writings such as Change Your Body, Change Your Life; Nine Essential Steps to Weight Loss; 23 Ways to Improve Your Life; and Living the Low Carb Life — which won the Consumers Choice Award for Best Nutrition Book of 2004!
In weekly e–Diets Internet chats and as a respected nutrition guru on iVillage, Jonny shares the good news that coffee, coconut oil, wine, chocolate, raw honey and butter can be healthy choices, to embrace and enjoy.
He suggests that we seek soy that is fermented, and is happy to affirm that cinnamon is not a sin. Jonny also reminds us of something that many children have discovered and forgotten — it’s fun to eat dandelions, and they’re good for you! For more information: www.jonnybowden.com.
