An Alumni Interview with Bernard J. Rosen, Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition


Prior to CCNH, what was your education experience?

My undergraduate and MBA degrees came through the traditional campus/classroom settings. I like to tell people that my distance learning experience with CCNH was memorable, rigorous, meaningful, and infinitely rewarding!

How did you become interested in holistic nutrition?

I’ve had a varied career in management: marketing, engineering, strategic planning; generally a pressure cooker environment! In Corporate America, workaholism is valued and rewarded, although the net effect is truly unhealthy.

It’s easy to spot external stressors that can gradually lead to illness-such as an inactive, sedentary lifestyle and sleep deprivation. However, each of us also inherits internal stressors that are equally threatening but less visible. The good news is that genetic tendencies don’t have to mean that disease is inevitable.

The foods we choose can either fuel our energy or bog us down. The human body is designed for wellness; we can strengthen individual body systems with nutrition, reduce inflammation, rebalance hormones, boost immunity, and so much more.

Have your studies created a career change, job enhancement, and/or personal healing?

Yes. In my previous management jobs, there was always great concern about the high cost of healthcare. Working mainly with men, I observed that males are often less healthy than females; also they don’t make the healthcare decisions in their families, and they certainly don’t model good health.

So, part of my internal thought process was, “How do we convey the importance of personal responsibility to a male audience?” Along the way I was able to change my own mind, change my life, and ultimately start my own company.

Through self-study of yoga and other Eastern philosophies such as Ayurveda, I’ve become a natural health mentor, consultant, and media columnist. As a positive side effect, I also lost 40 pounds in the process of creating Rosen Wellness, L.L.C.

Are you a teacher/coach?

I teach daily yoga classes and an ongoing series of nutrition classes at various locations in Wisconsin. I also consult onsite with national corporations, mentoring individuals, work teams, and larger groups.

I especially enjoy teaching a life-changing class called The Five Tibetans, which combines holistic health philosophy with daily yogic movement and meditation. Significant results can come from just 15 minutes per session-through which participants feel energetic benefits plus a profound relaxation response.

How, specifically, can yogic movement help individuals achieve so much, so quickly?

Through deeper breathing, we oxidize cell groups; asymmetric motion enhances bone health; lymphatic circulation supports the endocrine/organ systems; which in turn is soothing, relaxing, and mentally calming.

The body’s energy meridians and chakra system are designed as regenerative wellsprings in every sense of the word. A specific series of movements can help individually stimulate each energy zone and assist the elimination of toxins.
