Graduate Spotlight

Carl Middleton, N.D., D. Min.

As vice president for ethics and theology for Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives' network of 125 hospitals, Carl Middleton lectures extensively throughout the United States on topics related to the mind/body/spirit connection that we know to be essential to homeostasis and holistic health.

This road warrior says the CCNH distance-learning format was a perfect way for him to study and learn while working away from home. "My teachings have let me help others improve their quality of life with diet, herbs, supplements, guided visualization, stress management. In my world, conventional medicine is a foundation whose benefits are enhanced by natural healing modalities. For me, it is not either/or. In my work as a healthcare administrator, Clayton College helped me bridge several equally important aspects of care: traditional allopathic and traditional naturopathic, and of course spirituality."

Middleton is excited to see an evolution in the general public's perceptions regarding healthcare: "The patient is, indeed, ultimately responsible for his or her own health – from health choices that are preventative, to health maintenance, to intervention. The patient is not a passive bystander. In other words," he adds, "as Caroline Myss says, 'Your biography does become your biology. Medicine is not the miracle cure. We, ourselves, are the miracle cure.'"

However, he further observes that the medical community must be open to a give-and-take dialogue, willing to communicate and actively educate. Healthcare professionals have to assertively encourage an interactive dialogue, as an important safety net for appropriate care based on honest communication.

Carl says he dearly loves helping people know they're loved. As part of his ongoing traveling presentations to healthcare professionals, leaders and participants physically reach out and connect. "In joining hands we are energetically called to serve. Our love for others is our way of serving."
