Student Spotlight
Christiaan Max Huisden, N.D. candidate
"Accelerated pace, wide range of perspectives"
Christiaan Max Huisden was born in the Dutch Caribbean country of Curacao; his homeland of Suriname is considered the youngest nation in South America. With unspoiled rainforests, its multicultural communities tend to be closely in touch with natural foods and herbs, he says.
Ever since earning his first college degree in agriculture at the Universiteit van Suriname, Max has flourished in the heady domains of higher education and scientific research – as a student, teaching assistant, researcher and scientist. He holds multiple graduate degrees from the University of Florida: an M.A.G. in biotechnology with a specialization in reproductive physiology and an M.S. in animal science. Max is also a certified toxicologist with professional research experience in molecular toxicology.
In 2005 he earned his first doctoral degree from CCNH, a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition. Max is now an N.D. candidate with Clayton College and, concurrently, also conducting research in the area of nutraceuticals at the University of Florida where he is employed as a biological scientist.
How does our world-access and self-paced distance learning format compare with traditional campuses in North and South America? “Clayton’s courses are every bit as comprehensive as those I have taken at other institutions,” he affirms.
“As a scientist, I have the habit of thoroughly researching everything. Before choosing Clayton I contacted and spoke at length with a number of institutions specializing in natural health subjects. CCNH offered one of the better curricula and my experience has supported that discovery.
“The things I appreciate most about my Clayton experience are being able to work at an accelerated pace, and also being exposed to a full range of perspectives on various subjects relating to holistic nutrition.
“These studies marry my research and work experience in molecular toxicology, which traces the underlying causes of many common ailments such as cancer. I’ve come to realize that the pharmaceutical industry focuses mainly on the treatment of disease, with a huge gap in knowledge and education of disease prevention and natural healing. So many drugs have serious side effects that are known. It’s equally important to realize that there may be many more side effects as well that are not yet known and/or poorly understood.”
He adds that natural health and holistic nutrition are easy choices that his family “practices and preaches” in their home life. He and his wife are blessed with three healthy sons, ages nine, three and newborn. The family prefers natural foods, with scientific supplementation and plenty of activity.
“We love fresh air, being outdoors together, and martial arts. I am a black belt in Tae kwon-Do preparing for the 4th Dan, and my wife and our eldest son are mid-way through black belt training. Our three-year-old will begin martial arts training soon.”
Max provides customized holistic advice and one on one consultation. He plans to publish resource books and reference guides that offer holistic health solutions to common health issues.
