2003 Natural Health Conference: Gifts of Sustenance

This spring, more than 150 friends of CCNH gathered for three days of seminars, networking and intensive workshops, within a soothing retreat center designed to bring participants closer to nature.

Our second-annual educational conference, Building on Tradition, welcomed back a dozen students from our 2002 Herb Conference, along with several speakers from the first conference who returned to teach us some new things. Returning speakers included CCNH advisory board member, adjunct professor and alumna Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., and herbalists Matthew Wood, Glinda Watts, Darryl Patton, and Susan Kramer, Esq., Ph.D.

Daniel Gagnon's book signing, with CCNH faculty member Anita Barnett, N.D. and student Maria Wry. Daniel's Natural Reader Note on stress management: "Of all our natural tools for optimal health-sunshine, exercise, faith, food, creativity, rest-the real cornerstone is choice."

CCNH alumna, adjunct professor and advisory board member Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., meets octogenarian gypsy herbal legend and holistic pet care pioneer Juliette deBairacli Levy. Linda's Natural Reader Note on sea vegetables for natural beauty: "Before you take a pampering seaweed bath, exfoliate with a dry brush to increase blood circulation."

L-R: Herbalists Steven Horne, Matthew Wood and Susan Kramer share their evergreen wisdom with CCNH student Rick Gallion, director of Natural Blue, the holistic health choices division of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. Steven's Natural Reader Note on Flower Essences: "Pancreatic Energy enhances our ability to perceive pleasure, to find joy within our surroundings."

New presenters for our 2003 conference included best-selling nutrition author, CCNH adjunct professor and alumna Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., herbalists Steven Horne and Daniel Gagnon, iridologist Ellen Tart Jensen, Ph.D., and CCNH advisory board member and alumnus, Carl Middleton, N.D.

We also enjoyed a yoga class taught by CCNH student Annette Doody, two drumming demonstrations by John Scalici of Get Rhythm!C, and a rare visit from octogenarian gypsy herbal legend Juliette de Bairacli Levy, facilitated by CCNH student Janice Dinsdale.

Our faculty presenters included Wendy Arthur, M.D., Susie Hale, N.D., and Phyllis Light, AHG. Hale and Janice Martin, Ed.D. also led informal gatherings for doctoral students preparing for their dissertations and practicums.

CCNH adjunct faculty member Ted Spence, N.D., D.D.S., welcomes back Joan Abernathy and Catina Turner. Both students also attended our 2002 Herb Conference.

Ann Louise Gittleman was very popular at our booksigning event. CCNH is pleased to announce that this distinctive alumna was interviewed on NBC's Ask Dr. Phil and as a repeat guest on ABC's The View this spring.

John Scalici of Get RhythmC led a spirited drumming circle of about 60 drummers. Creative energies flew so high that a quick soaking thunderstorm came just as the drumming ended! John's Natural Reader Note: "Drumming creates entrainment, unity and connection. It's also great fun."

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, come visualize the mind/body/spirit wisdom of Building on Tradition-building bridges and making connections. Along with most photos, we include educational "sound bytes" or Natural Reader NotesC from the conference presentations. For more information, including about two dozen more photos, visit our conference archives.
