STUDENTS

Kathryn DeSantis, PH.D.in natural health student, and M.S. in natural health graduate. Princeton University honored four outstanding New Jersey secondary school teachers at its 2004 Commencement on Tuesday, June 1. Kathryn DeSantis was one of those four honorees. Each teacher received $5,000 as well as $2,500 for his or her school library. The staff of the Program in Teacher Preparation selected 11 finalists, each of whom was visited at work by an observer. Finalists were selected by a committee chaired by Dean of the College, Nancy Malkiel, two Princeton professors, and two external education professionals.

To expose her students to the thrill of scientific discovery, Kathryn DeSantis, a biology and genetics teacher at Lenape High School in Medford, staged a murder mystery in her lab. DeSantis gave the students evidence bags and printed narratives describing a fictional crime, which they had to solve using only their microscopes. This dramatic assignment was intended to enhance students’ skills in experimental procedures and critical thinking, and it is just one of many ways that DeSantis gets young minds energized about science and education. After eight years in the banking and computer industries, DeSantis turned to teaching to follow her passion for biology and find a more fulfilling career.

Teaching allows her to “provide students with opportunities to make the connections between classroom academics and real experience, leading them toward intrinsic motivation to learn, and to help each student become a good citizen and a responsible and contributing member of society,” she said.

Kathleen Hosner, PH.D. in holistic nutrition graduate. Somewhere between low carb versus low fat diets, extreme makeovers, and advice from the latest self-help guru is a simple solution to healthy living—one that gives more weight to emotional well-being than pounds on a scale. Full Heart/Satisfied Belly is a new book co-authored by Kathleen S. Hosner, Ph.D., and Linda Frazee of Scottsdale, Arizona, offering a refreshing approach to healthy living. Striving for the “right” number on a scale can’t promise permanent satisfaction. Topics covered in Full Heart/Satisfied Belly focus on how to achieve personal satisfaction despite life’s ups and downs that occur from time to time, including: distinguishing between physical and emotional cravings; finding foods that maintain energy; balancing stress and success; learning how to listen to your body; and how to survive eating out. Full Heart/Satisfied Belly is available on Amazon.com or visit www.fullbellyonline.com.

Thresa Johnson, PH.D. in natural health graduate. Thresa recently bought a salon and day spa that keeps her busy. Not one to sit idly by while life’s parade is marching on, Thresa also works as an assistant EMT-B instructor with her local university, and plans to teach at her local community college.

David M. Sell, M.S. in natural health graduate. David graduated summa cum laude in May 2004 from the Massage Therapy program at Monroe Community College (MCC), a unit of the State University of New York, in Rochester. The rigorous two-year, 1000-hour program includes extensive study in western, oriental, and sports massage, biological sciences, health education, and business ethics and management culminating in 150 hours of direct clinical practice, and preparing him for the state professional licensure examination. David’s goal is to help bridge the gap between traditional and complementary medicine. Once he obtains his state license, David will work as a clinical massage therapist in a hospital-based setting. Because he served as a hospice volunteer for several years, he hopes to work specifically with the terminally ill.

David also has future plans to become an adjunct professor at MCC. Intending to draw not only on his massage therapy education and life experiences, but also from his CCNH studies, he plans to teach a course in “Death and Dying,” as well as a proposed course in integrative modalities. With this, he hopes to broaden the understanding of health care options among nursing, dental, and medical students. Says David: “I enjoy working with organizations and individuals who encourage imagination and creativity, supporting my basic humanistic philosophy in which I feel a responsibility to be sensitive and responsive to the needs of others. This insight is the basis of my efforts to be genuine, giving, and supportive in both my personal and professional life. Because of my fascination with learning and new experiences, the variety of opportunities afforded me has enabled me to cultivate a sense of compassion in my life and my work.”
