Introduction

Call me a “late bloomer,” but 2005 has been my year to learn not to take anything for granted. Watching an internationally beloved, iconic city succumb to the forces of nature made me grateful for each remnant of my past life as an “adopted native” of New Orleans, Louisiana.

I moved to New Orleans when I was nine years old and stayed until I was 20. Despite a brief stay, the city’s culture, diversity, and heritage shaped my perceptions of life, love, and liberty. Although my love affair with New Orleans is now long distance, Hurricane Katrina literally hit quite close to home for me.

I have friends and family who lost a little and others who lost a lot; yet, they have one thing in common. No matter where Katrina’s winds blew them, they all want to go home to New Orleans. This devotion to a city and a way of life gives me hope for the future of New Orleans. Her people are resilient and resourceful and, like the mighty oak trees that line her streets, the roots of community run deep—New Orleans will rise again. Care has not forgotten the “Crescent City,” or any of the devastated Gulf Coast communities.

On the home front, celebrating CCNH's 25th anniversary and my 12th employment anniversary has brought unexpected gifts for the body, mind, and spirit. The entire staff celebrated the occasion at a dinner party catered by one of the city's finest restaurants. Celebrating even took place during the work days: we gathered for a 25th anniversary trivia game to test our minds—the prize was a generous gift certificate for Dr. Clayton's Naturals.

2005 also has granted the gifts of personal and professional growth. A recent promotion to CCNH's Communications Manager gives me more opportunities to reach the world through my writing about the college. As a result of my good fortune Courtney Grammer, a colleague and friend, has been promoted to Assistant Web site Coordinator. Together, we look forward to continuing to improve your Web site experience.

Inside this issue of Holistic Times you’ll find the 2006 Natural Health Conference brochure, an interview with Bernie Siegel, MD, and more celebrations of you. It is our wish that this winter brings you all many opportunities to spend time with friends and family, to practice acts of kindness, and to give the gift of love. Have a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and a wonderful new year!
