Curriculum Development Report
Future Electives
Being able to introduce new electives is one of the most exciting and enjoyable aspects of curriculum development. With a couple of them currently in the works, we are doubly excited about the prospect of adding two diverse and highly important topics to our curriculum. We anticipate that both courses-one in the basic sciences and the other in nutrition—will be available by the end of summer.
In the words of CCNH graduate Melissa Ryan, “So many people find the oceans to have natural healing qualities, and even though they may not understand why, they know that they ‘just feel better’ being near or in the salt water. For a few decades, scientists and public health officials have been studying ways in which the oceans physically impact human health…” And so began Ryan’s proposal when she approached us about developing the course Introduction to Oceans and Health.
Uniquely qualified to write on this topic, prior to earning an MS in Natural Health, Ryan completed a BS in Marine Biology at the University of Connecticut. In addition to many years’ experience in designing environmental and marine science curricula, she also participates in oceanographic research. Several problems are associated with uncontrolled blood sugar levels, including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and numerous cardiovascular issues. The course Nutritional Approaches to Blood Sugar Control will demonstrate the relationship between proper blood sugar levels and good health. In addition, it will present nutritional and lifestyle strategies for keeping blood sugar under control.
