Families That Travel Together, Learn Together
M.S. in holistic nutrition student Stephanie Tuss kissed her two preschoolers goodbye and boarded a plane with her mother, B.S. in natural health student Sharon Willet. Leaving frozen Wisconsin in early spring for a long weekend in sunny Georgia was more than just a vacation and more than just a conference. Attending their first Clayton College educational networking events together, Tuss and Willet say they’ll never forget the “layers of learning” that happen when mothers and daughters study together.
From sharing a room, planning to attend certain class sessions together, then separating at times to cover more ground and compare notes, meeting each other’s new friends, “Generally getting back with each other at least every few hours we learned so much in a few days,” says Tuss, “that we still haven’t stopped talking about it.”
Tuss, an elementary school teacher, was so motivated by her holistic nutrition curriculum that she zoomed through her first phase master’s courses within 15 months, while working full–time and raising two young daughters. Willet has been so impressed with Clayton’s natural health studies that she already intends to continue as a graduate student. Her next goal is to earn an M.A. degree in holistic wellness.
Mother and daughter agree that their favorite NHC 2006 presenter was fitness author Jonny Bowden, a CCNH doctoral alumnus who recently completed his Ph.D. in holistic nutrition. “When you see the issues of weight management through another person’s eyes, it’s easier to recognize the behavior issues to be addressed,” Willet concludes. “It’s not just about the weight itself. It’s about affirming, at a deeper level, the need for change.”
