From the Editor

It’s hard to believe that this Holistic Times is issue number one of volume 14. This student and graduate publication has been like my child the entire time that I have been at CCNH. The newsletter was my idea and I was given the latitude to “run with” the idea. Some of you have been reading it for 14 years and have watched both it and the college grow, while others are brand new readers. I am grateful to you both, old and new readers, as well as students, graduates, and anyone interested in learning more about the college and its attendees. Thank you for reading — you are a part of CCNH’s natural health community, and this publication is just one of the tools we use to bring us all together. 2006 was a record year for creating communities on the global scale. The popularity of social and professional networking Internet sites like MySpace, FaceBook, and LinkedIn grew by leaps and bounds, and the proliferation of blogs might be compared to mushrooms sprouting up overnight. More than ever before, people are indulging their need to reach out to others, to be heard, and to share themselves, their interests, passions, and skills with the rest of the world.

The virtual global community is not just for teenagers either! MySpace users run the age gamut from 13 to 60 and older. LinkedIn, a professional networking site, attracts users in their mid-20s and older. Blogs are an equal opportunity mode of communication. Anyone, of any age, anywhere on this green earth, can begin sharing his or her thoughts and observations with the world.

CCNH is no different. A few new ways we plan to accomplish our community building goals in 2007 include an overhaul to the Web site — students, look for your own site coming this spring — and the addition of an educational travel blog, which will be used to communicate with you from our conference, education days, and other conferences, conventions, and events that we attend. If you haven’t already created a blog account with us and left a message, drop by and say hello. If you’ve met us on the road, be sure to let us know!

The other way in which CCNH is expanding its circle in 2007 is with the annual natural health conference. This year’s theme is Building a Natural Health Community, and we are pleased to bring together speakers from a wide array of backgrounds who are eager to share their knowledge with you and become a part of your natural health community. Sessions this year include topics such as community food supplies, being a member of the global community, and creating healthy living environments. Sessions on nutrition, diet and lifestyle, and herbal studies are also plentiful. Join us April 19–22 at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City, Georgia, for a learning vacation.

To jumpstart our year of community building, we are pleased to offer interviews with two of our global friends. First, read about Dr. Groesbeck Parham, M.D., CCNH adjunct faculty, and his work in Zambia screening HIV-positive women for cervical cancer. Next, read about a CCNH student’s experiences at Findhorn, an intentional community in Scotland. David Hoffman, one of this year’s conference presenters was a member of the Findhorn community in the 1970s.

Welcome to a new year and to a new volume of Holistic Times — we’re pleased you are a part of our community.
