Iridology I believe in iridology as the eye of the natural healing arts, the window through which the wholistic perspective on health becomes understandable. Iridology is a wonderful means of demonstrating the rewards of choosing a healthy way of life, the ideal of preventive medicine. Dr. Bernard Jensen Iridology involves the study of the iris, the colored area of the eyes, in which tendencies are revealed for physical and psychological challenges and strengths. The iridologist identifies areas of potential health concern by using a magnifier to observe the various colors and shapes within the iris. The types and locations of these iris signs signify physical and emotional tendencies. In general, both iris patterns and health tendencies are inherited and remain with the individual throughout life. However, because lifestyle, personal environment, and age also affect health, there is great opportunity for taking care of potential problems before they arise. Because the iris reveals strengths and weaknesses rather than specific diseases, iridology is an excellent assessment tool for natural health and nutrition consultants. Once the iris evaluation has revealed potential health challenges, the consultant may begin to educate his or her client in the appropriate strategies for maintaining health. Iridology is an ancient practice. Evidence suggests that the irises have been used as a health indicator for thousands of years in many parts of the world. Todays iridology began in the 1820s with Dr. Ignatz Von Peczely, a Hungarian physician. In Europe, the growth and development of iridology may be traced through many generations. It was introduced into the United States around the turn of the 20th century. The most prominent American iridologist was the late Dr. Bernard Jensen, a chiropractic physician, who kept the art and science alive almost single-handedly for many years. Today, the International Iridology Practitioners Association (IIPA) functions as a certifying body for iridologists worldwide. IIPA unifies and represents health care practitioners who use iridology, and it provides professional credentials through certification exams. Clayton College educates students in Comprehensive Iridology, which was developed by IIPA as a combination of the American and European models of iridology. This form, which contains the latest information on the theory and practice of iridology, remains up-to-date through extensive current research.
