Travel at Clayton College
of Natural Health: The 2006 Herbal Mountain Medicine Appalachian
Tour
06.1.2006,
Alabama—CCNH is pleased to announce its annual
fall educational travel opportunity, the Herbal Mountain Medicine
Appalachian Tour, September 14-18, 2006. Join staff, students,
and herbalism enthusiasts as we explore the traditions of Appalachian
folk medicine and the time-honored teachings of Tommie Bass,
the herb “doctor” of Shinbone Ridge, Alabama.
Adjunct
faculty Darryl Patton, N.D., Herbalist will lead you in discovering
the legacy of folk remedies handed down by the late Bass, who
was a pivotal figure in the changing landscape of 20th century
American herbalism and an inspiration to a whole generation
of younger herbalists. When Bass died in 1996 at the age of
88, he was widely recognized as one of the world’s
leading herbalists. He was featured on the front page of the
Wall Street Journal in 1985, was featured on the television
program “Portrait of America,” and on National
Public Television.
Tour
participants will enjoy the hands-on study of medicinal plants
and herbal healing traditions in the historical Chattanooga,
Tennessee area. Patton will teach you how to make your own salve
based on Tommie Bass’s original formula,
and he will demonstrate and share his expertise of wilderness
survival skills. Patton is the author of Mountain Medicine:
The Herbal Remedies of Tommie Bass. Visit www.stalkingthewild.com to learn more about him.
CCNH
director of herbal studies Phyllis D. Light, Herbalist, AHG
will lead a hands-on demonstration of how to create your own
herbal medicine chest and share stories of her Native American
heritage. Phyllis is the author of the upcoming book The
Principles and Practice of Appalachian Medicine. Visit www.phyllisdlight.com to learn more about her.
Spend
the last day of the tour in Chattanooga and see Rock City. Picnic
atop Lookout Mountain, and enjoy its wide vistas of seven states.
Identify herbs and plants as Patton guides us through Rock City
Gardens and shares stories of his time spent with the legendary
Tommie Bass. As a special treat, the world-famous Tennessee
Aquarium is reserved exclusively for our private farewell dinner.
The
$1,299 per person fee includes ground transportation, lodging,
plus nine meals.
