Clayton
College of Natural Health’s Traveling Classroom: The Herbal
Mountain Medicine Appalachian Tour
10.26.05,
Alabama—Clayton College of Natural Health believes in going
the distance for its students.
For
five days in late September-early October 2005, 30 people ranging
in ages from 22 to 74 and hailing from California to New Jersey,
from Canada to Denmark—and everywhere in between—gathered
in a traveling classroom to explore the blend of healing cultures
unique to the Appalachian region of the country. Participants enjoyed
the hands-on study of medicinal plants and herbal healing traditions
in the historical Chattanooga, Tennessee area
with CCNH Director of Herbal Studies Phyllis D. Light, Herbalist,
AHG and Adjunct Faculty Darryl Patton, ND, Herbalist.
The
group traveled back in time with Darryl Patton, studying medicinal
plants of the
Civil War at Chickamauga Battlefield. He also guided the group in
the art of making soaps and salves as our ancestors did over a hundred
years ago. Darryl is the author of Mountain Medicine: The Herbal
Remedies of Tommie Bass. Visit www.stalkingthewild.com
to learn more about Darryl Patton.
Students
and fellow travelers experienced a “Taste for Herbs”
and “Herbs for Women” in interactive presentations where
they sampled herbal teas while learning their healing properties
with Phyllis. Phyllis is the author of the upcoming book The
Principles and Practice of Appalachian Medicine. Visit www.phyllisdlight.com
to learn more about Phyllis D. Light.
Ruben
Sioxson, a BS in Holistic Nutrition student had the following to
say about the traveling classroom: “Being around this wonderful
group who carry a great amount of energy and meeting the beautiful
staff of CCNH finally in person was a highlight. They were very
hospitable, informative and fulfilling. I’ve learned a great
deal and extended my family here on this great earth.”
Events
like the Educational Travel series, trade show Education Days with
leaders in natural health and the annual health conference are just
some of the opportunities CCNH offers to shorten the distance in
distance education.
